Hugh Leeman is an artist, lecturer, and writer. Born and raised in rural Indiana, he embarked on a multi-year journey inspired by stories from travelers he met in the Caribbean. He traded paintings for rent while traveling and learned to draw from books while teaching English in China. He moved to the United States from the Middle East. In his social practice, Leeman collaborated on a self-empowerment project with unhoused San Franciscans and co-founded Aetatribes.org to bring clean water projects to the indigenous Aeta Tribes of the Philippines. Currently, he collaborates with diverse communities, using AI, storytelling, and painting to preserve cultural memory and is the managing editor of Roborant Review. Leeman has exhibited his artwork and projects at the de Young Museum, the Museum of Mexico City, the Museum of Contemporary Art Arlington, and the Masur Museum of Art.
